editorial design & complex typography
The Design Blueprint
This project involved developing a comprehensive prototype for a new technology publication targeting futurists, AI researchers, and digital artists. The objective was to create a cohesive visual language that felt high-tech, high-end, and authoritative.
The Big Idea: I developed the title Rendered Reality to reflect the intersection of the physical and digital worlds.
Aesthetic Direction: The visual system utilizes deep charcoals, metallic silver textures, and neon blue accents to appeal to a tech-savvy audience.
Components: The project included a high-impact cover, a logical table of contents, a sophisticated “Pro Tips” article spread, and a custom subscription card.
Typography & Hierarchy Strategy
Font Engineering: The cover features a custom treatment of the Soffie font for the title “RENDERED,” paired with the aggressive, tech-inspired Metal Lord for “REALITY.”
Visual Balance: By applying the Rule of Thirds to the cover and utilizing distinct typographic weights for headlines versus body copy, I established a clear entry point for the reader, ensuring the most important information stands out first.
Advanced Technical Implementation
Unlike simple layouts, this prototype required strict adherence to professional editorial standards using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop:
Style-Driven Design: I utilized Paragraph and Character Styles to maintain absolute consistency in hyphenation, justification, and optical kerning across all pages.
Systemic Organization: The layout featured a professional Running Head system and a minimum of two Object Styles for consistent graphic application.
Complex Interactions: I implemented a complicated text wrap around high-resolution imagery to create a dynamic, modern eye-flow that breaks the traditional grid.
